Construction Games with Kepler's Solid
Construction Games with Kepler's Solid is a translation of a booklet by Gerhard Kowalewski published in German in 1938. Kowalewski was a mathematician who was also well known for his textbooks and historical essays. This booklet explores the design of geometrical games and puzzles without advanced mathematics but does make extensive use of geometry and some trigonometry. Kowalewski's essay was one of the inspirations for the original development of Zome. The 85 page translation has been modernized yet is faithful to the original. There is an illustrated appendix by David Booth that provides a modern perspective.
Additional Details
Kepler's solid is construct-able with the red lines of the Zome system. In fact, the puzzles treated by Kowalewski are all construct-able in the Zome system. In addition, the essay is based on the interesting idea of the "domino rule" that opens up new vistas in combinatorial geometry.
Translator
Dr. David Booth is a mathematician and instructor in the Waldorf schools who first used Zome in the classroom. He has found other educationally useful suggestions in Kowalewski's booklet.
